Here we are! Our rig is an '05 Lance 1121 on an '06 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD dually. This will be our third year RVing, once I get the camper on the truck which should happen tomorrow. Always a harrowing experience for me. I'll post pictures when I have some new ones. The ones I have already taken don't do justice.

Here's to the success of this forum!

famous~

why is loading your camper a "harrowing experience"? I have no experience with any RV, but I'm thinking of getting a camper. I was hoping loading and off-loading would be a relatively smooth operation--i can do without more stress.

Coolstreak, don't listen to me, I'm a worry wart. There are many, many people who have absolutely no trouble and no angst over loading their camper. Do a search on rv.net and you will find lots of encouragement and hints regarding the task. I've only done it once and that time with no problems (but lots of worrying).

The trick is simply to line the truck up with the camper and voila! This is simplified by running a strip of tape down the exact center of the front of the camper, and another one along the bed of the truck. I have 4-wheel drive and by putting it in low range I move slowly enough so my wife can stop me if anything is amiss. I also stop, get out and look things over numerous times as I back up.

It's just that the camper looks so vulnerable standing up on its skinny little legs, like a breath of air would knock it over, much less a 7,000 pound truck. If you've ever successfully backed a trailer, or routinely parallel park your truck with ease, you will have no problems.

Far be it from me to discourage anyone from getting a truck camper. We LOVE ours, and wouldn't trade it for any other kind of RV.

Now, wish me luck. I am on my way out of the house to the storage area to load up for the first time this year!

Howdy! With regard to the Ohio outings, when I have known about them the timing just hasn't been right. :( One, I know, I didn't hear about until after it was over. :( :( When the stars align, I will be there, for sure!! :) :) :)

I loaded the camper just last week and am having the back-up camera replaced. We're going out for the first time this coming weekend. Pretty late in the season, I know. I spent the last two weeks in May on a motorcycle camping trip with my two sons. Priceless.

Hope to see you again!

Howdy all, I'm another TC person.

My rig is the smallest moldest TC I know of and rather uncommon. I've had reason to find out that the factory burned not long ago. & those who have tried to contact them in the last few months have been unsuccessful. So, what does it matter that the website is still up.

I might as well have an anonymous TC.

I'm now in The Maritimes of Canada. I just moved across The Gulf from Newfoundland, after 24.5 years there this summer. Sooner or later I will make it to Alaska. Then we will find out which is boondockers/gravel pitters heaven Newfoundland or Alaska.

Elsewhere I tend to post more in the Canadian Section than the TC section. By request, I've done some articles on RVing in Canada for another site http://www.rvingoutpost.com/articlespecs.php?jobnum=50. They need updating.

Well, hey, Little Kopit!

Welcome. Yours is the first post on the truck camper forum for a long, long time. I wonder how we can get this thing going.

Sorry to hear that your factory burned. What brand is the camper?

We just got back from a 300 mile each way trip from Pittsburgh, PA to Ithaca, NY. That's the farthest we've travelled to camp. We stayed at a NY state park that had only 11 electric sites. All of them was taken for the weekend. It's a good thing we made a reservation. In the rest of the park, some 70 sites, there were only two sites occupied. One a tent, the other a camper van. The weather was gorgeous.

We barely had enough electrical cable to reach the oddly placed outlet. We needed electricity for our furnace and morning coffee. Couldn't do without either. In the future I am carring a 25' extension, wihch will ensure that I can always reach an outlet, as well as doing away with the need to coil the camper's cord into it's tiny, pain-the-the-wazoo compartment. It will be much easier to coil the extension and throw it in the truck.

We just about ran out of diesel on the way back--finally found a station, WAY off the beaten track, 27 miles from empty. Getting there, we lost a bike from the bike rack going over a bump and didn't know it. On the way back from the station to the interstate, a guy flagged us down and gave us our bike back, which he had rescued from the street. There are some nice people in the world!

Anyway, if you have any ideas as to how to get something like this forum going, let me know!

Greetings famous person, for what are you famous (besides your wonderful mind :P )

My unit is more or less @ http://www.cargobody.com.

I drove from Newfoundland to Iowa to get it in 2004. That's ok, we mostly boondocked, but did the cg thing in Sault Ste. Marie, On en route.

I need hydro for the fridge. Tho, if put comes to shove, I can get ice and fill buckets with ice. For cooking, as long as it isn't pouring, I'd rather cook out of doors:

Image

But I also do this kind of cooking (tho that isn't mine)

Image

The trip to Iowa and back was over 10,000 km/6,000 mi.

If you look in my photo album, you will also see that I had some fun up 'on the Labrador'.

This year I moved. Next summer I will probably do mid-week things, so as to miss the weekend campers.

I'm retired

PP, I know both Beddows & Clattertruck can come up with more fun TC shots.

Howdy Ron/Clattertruck, good to see you here. Did you notice that there is a section for photos? Not but what I will put some shots from last summer in the Canuck section when the 'workload' eases up a bit. & yes, I succeeded in shifting me and stuff across THE Gulf.

Re: Where are all the truck camper folks?

Winter is upon us. The camper is in storage and the truck has gotten its 6000 mile service. The truck is again parked on our street, and if the neighbors don't like it, I am sorry. We feel we compromised enough when we yielded to their complaints and now park it in a storage area about 10 miles away when the camper is on it.

Next year we will try to get an earlier start than we did this year. Discovering that that our furnace puts out plenty of heat has extended our season by a good two months. We tried it for the first time in the three years we've had the camper just this next to the last trip in October to upstate New York.

I am hoping, I know we all are, that the price of diesel stays down over the Winter. It just killed me this year to be mentally calculating as I drove down the road that every ten miles under the wheels cost me $5. Our trips are usually under two hundred miles each way but even at that, $200 in fuel for a weekend?! Obscene. (It's $3.39/gal. now in Western PA).

I envy those of you who live in warmer climes and can camp year round. Please spare a thought for us poor, snow bound Northerners as you sit comfy around your campfires.

One reason I have a TC is because a T is my only set of wheels.

I will never ever live where some sputter sputter phony idea of neighborhood appearance will interfere with where my camper is. I can see putting a larger rig into storage because you don't have room on your property. But for heavens sake, why oh why can't you all convince the municipalities that a costly rv adds kudos to the neighborhood?

Abbenbrook, just bought a trailer very much like yours. How does it impact your mileage? I had brakes installed on it, I figured no sense in adding more braking weight. I ordered it with a 60 inch hitch so hopefully I can get away without a super hitch or anything expensive like that. I need an 18 inch extension regardless. I pick it up tomorrow.

It turns out that the truck with the camper is completely legal on our street, although the neighbors did everything in their power to get us busted. The parking enforcement lady told us, "you don't have a single nice neighbor!" The first year we had it our rig was scrutinized by the cops, parking enforcement supervisors, was photographed by the authorities, and there was not a blessed thing they could do. We have a resident's street parking permit for the truck and the camper is considered cargo. And I considered it ironic that the truck alone was worth more than 90% of the other cars parked in the neighborhood. Add the camper and we've trumped them all.

As long as they were making snarky hints and comments and outright threats--even when it was parked directly in front of our house--I was d---ed if I was going to move it. Finally one neighbor got wise and invited usover for drinks and NICELY mentioned that the bulk of the rig made it difficult for people to see traffic on our fairly busy street when they backed out of their driveways. This is undeniably true--no matter where we parked it on the street at least one person's view was going to be blocked--and since they were finally being nice about it, we decided to find a another place.

The storage area is relatively easy to get to and is actually more secure than in front of our house. I've had the truck egged once and our jeep has had the top slashed twice. For $60/mo. it's worth the peace of mind.

I feel a lot like you do, kopit, but we could hold our ground and be the focus of simmering resentment or we could be good neighbors. Life isn't simple when you live in proximity to others. We can't always have it exactly the way we like.

Hello all...

New to the forum. purchased our rig new this spring.

2007 Northern Lite 10-2 RR Northern Series with 80 watt solar & A/C. we love the camper,
and the 2007 Chevrolet 3500HD Ext cab handles the hauling very well. All is held together with
TorqLift Frame mounts & Fastgun tiedowns.

The truck is the 6.0L gas. We have been camping in the BC interior, and so far all is well.

Welcome! You have a great rig. Are you really camping in the interior of BC at this time of year? The Winter I spent in Dunster was brutal.

Greetings Fiero,

You'll have to give us some pics from your travels. I got the impression you camped from last spring to........, not necessarily in the past month. Pics will have us all on the same page.

I know of a chap who camps in northern BC starting September and ending in May. They have solar panels, which they use for power for their rig which is a well insulated Big Foot.

Hello again...

we are actually going to be camping in Calgary over christmas. (brr??) :o

i will toss in a few pics of where we have been this spring/summer.

I was at the Northern Lite factory this morning asking about "cold weather performance".
they told me that as long as i travel with the furnace running, i should not have any problems with the holding tanks freezing up. (I was very glad to hear this) Mr Feeny told me that with the interior temp set for 70F, the basement should easily stay approximately 45F. (on new campers they are adding a "warming lamp" in the gate valve compartment).

I told him i am planning to put a car interior warmer in the basement area for when plugged in. (he thought it was a good idea)

our first trip was to Grand Forks BC in april, and it was -14C & snowed. so that was rather exciting. (forgot the camera).
Golden Ears provincial park (Maple Ridge, BC) was the long weekend in May. (pics to follow) Then off to Shuswap Lake Provincial Park (Scotch Creek, BC). we made several trips there this year.

Wish us luck in Calgary for our first winter outing. hope all goes well... :)

Will.

Will let you know how the trip to Calgary goes

I don't know if you are interested. I get the impression you live in SW BC. We have several TC events in BC & Washington over the year. If you are into rallies & caravans, contact me.

I'm one.

I live rural anyhow. So, I get out to do and see what's what around and about all winter, but head home for night.

Nice to see another TCer. Keep the pics coming.
