1/2 ton towable 5th wheel

Unread postby wildwood on Sun Jun 27, 2010 12:18 am

I am currently in the market for a new half ton towable 5th wheel trailer
I need a bunkhouse floorplan and need something with ample storage
I have looked at a Cougar X-Lite 27SAB and this unit is pretty much what I am looking for.
Has anyone on this forum got a unit like this and towing with a half ton?
X-Lite appears to be a good quality product but wondering if anyone has owned one for a while and how they stand up long term.
Also, what is max weight you can tow comfortably with a 1500 Dode Ram

Thanks for your help

I have a so called half ton towable lite 5er (see signature)and I sold my Ram 1500 and replaced it with a Ram 2500 CTD in order to be safely within the weight limits of the pin weight etc. The trailer you quote is longer and heavier than mine and has a possible gross weight of nearly 10,000 lbs. NOT LIGHT AT ALL! That could possily give you a pin weight of up to 1600. Way too much for a Ram 1500 after you have deducted the weight for the hitch, passengers etc. Can you tow it? Yes. Should you? Not in my opinion! With a Ram 1500 go for a much shorter 5er with a LOT less weight, or look for a Travel Trailer instead. The 2010 Ram 1500 has a max payload capacity of 1900. Take off 200 for hitch, another 200 for passengers and say 100 for non standard gear and fuel - you would be left with about 1400 - not enough unless you put very little in the trailer and avoid hills! ...and that is payload for the 2010 (from the Dodge web site) I know that earlier 1500s had even less payload capacity.

There are some who happily tow a fiver like this with a half ton. As for me, I wouldn't even consider it.
