what operates when trailer is idle

I am curious to find out what operates in an RV when it is parked but left with only 12v power.

I am trying to size a solar panel to keep the battery charged bu don't know how to measure what power is being used while it is parked.

All of your interior lights will work as well as things like the water pump and bathroom fan. The fridge and stove will operate on gas (Propane). The fridge control circuitry also runs on 12 volts. If it doesn't get plugged into a wall socket, it will likely work for you. What do you have for batteries? The more the better.

Mike - I think he means what is left running that will cause a draw on the battery when most of the stuff you list is actually turned off.

In my trailer it is basically the Propane detector. The CO detector runs of batteries. The only other thing that draws 12v when all is turned off is the amp for the TV outlet. Check that the light is off and you should be OK. Other than that I can't think of anything. Of course, if you have the furnace set to run and the thermostat is set high enough you will get a draw for the fan.. Obviously you need to shut that off! :)

Martin,

You're right. I did a bit of a test today and the LP gas detector did come on. The only other thing I noticed was that the clock and face plate of the Touch Audio multimedia system lights up to a dim only.

I can't imagine either of those would draw any more than 0.5 amp at 12 volts.

Any thoughts?

Sorry for my error. I wasn't sure if you were referring to the trailer when its parked or in storage or weather you were out dry camping. My bad.

Generally speaking - if the unit is in storage outside - nothing should be operating. The electrical units are un-plugged and the propane tanks would be shut-off, so no there's reason to operate a CO detector. The batteries could be in re-charge mode if a solar panel is connected.

Best thing I can think off is to shut everything down and then hook a DVM amp meter in the positive lead and measure the amp draw that is there. Then you can look up the Amp/Hr rating of the batteries and then figure out how long the load will be covered by your batteries.

Just my 2 cents to the pile...

some refrigerators have moisture control this is a heat strip I think 12v and gas frig and hot water without pilots (DSI)uses a little power for the control board and ignition
Have a good one
