New members from PA

Unread postby famousperson on Sun Jun 08, 2008 12:30 pm

Hi. We, Marcia and Peter, just registered moments ago. We are from Pittsburgh, PA. Our rig is an '05 Lance 1121 slide-in camper (truck camper), which we haul around on an '06 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD dually. We are reasonably active over on RV.net and are kind of curious about why someone thought it necessary to start a new RV forum--not that we object. Quite the contrary. We are hoping to find good fellowship here, too. :)

Welcome aboard, it's ALWAYS nice to meet a "famousperson". I think you'll find we're a pretty friendly group around here. None of that "the beatings will continue until morale improves" you get on some forums :D

Welcome to the forum! Yes, we're new (less then three months old), and yes, I didn't jump into this without a great deal of thought to the matter.

I myself were (and still am in some respects) active over at rv.net and there's no doubt that it's vastly larger then us with an immense amount of reference material - I've used it as a personal reference and interesting place to frequent for years before I ever signed up and became an active contributor.

But, I've found the downtime increasingly frustrating - for example, it's down right now, and that's a big issue IMHO.

One thing you won't experience here is downtime - the software architecture (phpBB) and hardware behind the scenes (a powerful virtually dedicated server in a colocation facility with no load/memory/database/bandwidth limits) ensures that the forum is always responsive and snappy even under heavy load. We've achieved 99.8% uptime to date on this server, and our only downtime was due to a mistake on my behalf which I fixed shortly after I noticed I had screwed up. ;)

A wise man once told me that if someone else wasn't filling a need properly, it presented an opportunity for someone else to jump in and do it better. This is that opportunity, and this is what I'm offering.

I've been building the forum around the requests and needs of the membership which has helped mold it to what the members want, instead of what the administration feels they need. Along with careful selection of moderators fairly overseeing the site without a heavy hand, I think you'll find us "Different" then a lot of other places, and since we're entirely non-commercial we don't have to answer to anyone.

I've got 20+ years of forum related experience dating back to the days of 300 baud modems and BBS's, so this isn't a new thing for me - I have a lot of experience to draw upon, and with the contribution of the membership I'm hoping that the forum will grow into a success.

And after that long and interesting introduction, welcome, "famousperson"! I'm curious - how'd you come up with your handle? Are you famous locally, or famous among your family & friends for good BBQ, or some such thing? :)
