Hello from Illinois!

Unread postby plainsman48 on Fri Aug 27, 2010 9:14 pm

Ozimo told me to come over and visit.

I'm Brett Jensen from the Chicago metro area - actually we live in the 'burbs and haul horses to/from racetracks and the farms in Kentucky and Florida. We haul with two rigs - the 01 Dodge 3500 flatbed, not detuned with 72 gal aux tank and a 38ft 21,000# six stall Jamco trailer - this rig's GCWR is 33,000#. The second is a 79 Mack COE, 350 hp engine and Jake with 300 gal tanks, 15kw apu and 53' Wilson Bison traIler - GCWR is 80,000#, tho we have weighed as much as 98,500# hauling draft horses.

Anyway, after my Mom and step-Dad died this year, I decided to retire as wildlife manager and see some more of the country - just not the East Coast and Mid-West!

So, we are putting the brakes on the horse hauling biz for the rest of the year and going around smelling the roses. We made a short trip to Yellowstone and that whetted our appetite for more - Glacier and Banff are top of the chart and where we are headed next week.

Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.

Morning' me son,

Bout time you 'arrived'.

Heading west, you could cross over the border and check out the fortresses from when the Mounties first started or the dinosaur grounds. Of course, there are also the rockies and all kinds of places heading north. But the this year's fires are still going, though on the wane, if I hear correctly. That's just broad strokes.

The top rig in sig has been replaced with a FL 60 puller and a 40' Teton - more creature comforts than the horse trailer. Planning to take US20 across to I35 and up to US2, across the high line to ?

What to do in Waterton?
Then up to Edmonton (gotta take her to the mall), down to Emerald Lake-Banff-Ft. Steele and from there?

We left real early this morning and are sitting in the Grand Forks Campground. The trip outta here was with light fog in the morning. Currently 58F - a pleasant breeze, but the humidity is high just like home.

Next stop is Ft. Berthold - Four Bears Casino in New Town. Throw a few coins in the slots and do a little walleye fishing. Then across Montana to Browning, then up to Waterton for some serious backcountry hiking.

Capt. Abraham says he'll meet us in Alberta - just can't wait to see him again!

We haven't yet. I know Big AL - someone you need to meet sometime. He's the coordinator. He found me this great tractor and the Teton trailer. Friends of friends - you know a deal maker.

Yes, he's The one who came up with 1/2 or more of the tour routes they took in Africa and Oz last year. Al's the one who told me Abe had been on the Edmund Fitzgerald until that last trip (after I told him I'd been driving to Sault Ste. Marie, ON for work the night of the wreck. )

That's THE man! Long ago we believed he worked for an organization - but he denies it. He just has the pulse on things and places and people. Bert (Abraham's brother) told us the story about the Fitz - just chilling!

Well, enough of that - it's almost dawn and we are going fishing on Lake Sakawakea (sp?) today. We are laying up for a couple days here.

Ya, ya, ya - that was me! I was sea-sick from the day I got on in June, till two days after I left da boat in Superior. Sorry she went down - but it was only a matter of time. Huge waves on that lake, makes even most experienced seamen ill. Funny thing is I never get sick on my boat.

Gonna meet them in Browning this weekend......more to follow.

The trip thru Waterton was great - well worth it. Then over Crowsnest and up thru Cranbrook, Ft.Steele, Banff, Jasper and continuing on to Hinton and now in Edmonton.

This morning the two itinerant and very tired travelers, Capt. Abe and myself are sitting in the Cafe Sorrenteno at the West Edmonton Mall while the ladies shop. Of course they shopped all yesterday while we amused ourselves at the pool hall. I think I need a trailer on my trailer!

From here in a day or so down to Calgary then straight across Canada to Winnipeg, then south to home. Capt. Abe says he's going to California from here and it was a pleasure to have him as our guide.

Great to meet you Brett. My best to your family. We flew down to SFO and looked at another vessel - but it wasn't as advertised - it was worse!

We flew back home - and my nephew drove the Uni back to the camp in the 'Horns. Gonna miss hunting season.
