Our 1st Long Trip in RV!

Unread postby JQSpree on Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:03 pm

Hi everyone. Just returned from our first rv trip longer that 4-5 days, 11 days, 1600 miles and two states. The trip was great, a little rushed here and there but not too bad. Here is a summary and if anyone want any info on the places we visited or stayed at, just ask.

Day 1: Sacramento, CA to Lassen Nat'l Park, 210 miles, our longest pull since buying trailer in Jan.
The pull up I-5 wasn't too bad and weather was great. Hwy 44 to Hwy 89 to Manzanita CG were nice 2 lane roads. Our reserved site at the CG was a little short and we were able to find another site for 3 nights, a pull-thru that was much better. Very quiet CG. No hookups. This was why we left early since many of their sites are first come first served.

Day 2: Lassen. Toured the 60 mile park road. The park was great, lots of nice hikes, thermo areas, volcanic features, photo shots.

Day 3: We decided to leave early and head north via hwy 89 and hwy 97 towards just below Bend, Oregon, near Crescent Lake, 285 miles to meet friends who have a cabin there and others from Sacto who were camping in Washington. We spent the night at Collier State Park in Chiloquin, Oregon, a very nice state park with great mining museum and outdoor exhibits. This was about 200 miles from Lassen and gave us time to vist Lower Klamouth Wildlife Area and take a 10 mile tour on gravel roads with deadends (with the trailer). Whew.

Day 4-5: Drove last 85 miles to our friends cabin for afternoon get togeather. Went trout fishing in unfished stream on their property and caught several brookies and rainbows. Visted water falls and Odell Lake, Crescent Lake the next day, nice falls and trail.

Day 6: Drive Hwy 58 to Eugene, Hwy 126 to Bandon by the Sea, 220 miles, where we had reservations at Bullards Beach SP. Very nice large state park with hookups. Had a little fog but otherwise nice weather to tour the Oregon Dunes, and nearby coastal areas. Two nights here were a little more peaceful.

Day 8: Just a short drive down the coast Hwy 101 to Gold Beach for 2 more nights. Stayed at a small CG, Secrets Camp RV park, with hookups and about 35 sites. Nice pull-thru and again pretty quiet except for a couple of all men fishing groups. There was a big fishing derby that week. But by 9pm all was quiet.
Saw more of the coast and did the 64 mile Jerry's Rogue River Jet Boat ride the next afternoon, which was exciting, with lots of thrills, and wildlife along the way.

Day 10: On to Trinidad, CA near Eureka, 145 miles for our last night. Stayed at another small CG, Azaela Glen, near Patricks Point SP, which was full. This small CG had hook ups, and several seasonal clients, but still quiet and we were only there for a while. We unhooked and went out touring for the evening. Found 60-70 elk near the road and got some close photos.

Day 11: Head out on Hwy 299 to I-5 and home near Sacto, 340 miles, our longest day yet. We had several road construction and fire fighting delays. This was a long day with only one driver and strong side winds all the way back.

All in all, the KZ Spree was no trouble and the Silverado did fine even if a few of the climbs were a struggle. So we survived and will look forward when we can take even longer trips that many of you already enjoy.

Hope this wasn't too long. Don't have a blog yet and haven't got photos ready to post. Got some nice rv photos for our board if still needed.
