Did I mess up? (somewhat long)

Unread postby catmom on Thu Aug 14, 2008 8:28 pm

I had fun this afternoon. I had dropped by our local RV dealer (where we bought our last 2 trailers) to get some supplies (RV TP & the like) and while I was there, was in close proximity to a conversation between one of the dealer's employees and a prospective customer. The customer had obviously just been looking at something on the lot, in company with the employee, and was obviously quite interested. He was concerned, though (evidently new at towing) whether his TV would tow what he had been looking at. The conversation went something like this:

Customer (let's call him Joe): "Will I be able to tow it?"
Dealer's employee (let's call him Bill): "What do you have?"
Joe: "A Tundra."
Me (I was standing right by them waiting to pay for my goods; they were standing right by the checkout counter): "What year?"
Joe: "2007."
Me: "Do you have the tow package."
Joe indicates he does.
Bill: "He's looking at a popup." To Joe: " Sure!"
Me: (same time as Bill): "NO PROBLEM!" :) "We tow a 34-footer with our Tundra."
Joe: "How fast can I go with it?" (with a bit of a smile)
Me: "As fast as your trailer tires are rated for - about 65 mph."

Their conversation continued a bit more, with me out of it at this point. Later on, out on the dealer's lot, "Joe" was still looking unsure. The dealer & "Bill" were both outside talking with us. I pointed out a Flagstaff trailer about the size of ours and told Joe, "That's the same size we tow with ours." At that point it sunk home to him, I think, and the light bulb went on - no more doubt. Depending on what his wife says, I think he'll buy.

After I came home I was online and I was still chuckling about this, so decided to post about it on the Other Site. Well, 3 people jumped on me about butting in, etc. Yes, I did butt in. But I like our dealer, and would like to see him stay in business (partly for selfish reasons - he's located 2 miles from our house and is easy to get to for supplies, repairs if needed, etc.) And I don't think I told "Joe" (whatever his name really is - I really don't know) anything untrue. It would be different if he had been looking at a trailer - I would likely have told him what we were towing, but would have gone into the trailer's weight etc. Since he's looking to tow a medium-sized PUP (not even a new highwall) with a new Tundra equipped for towing, I don't have any qualms saying "NO problem" to him! :)

So - did I mess up? (Bear in mind, I am female. We do tend to speak up in different ways & about different things than males, usually. :) )

Incidentally, our dealer seems to be doing ok despite the economy. "Bill" said they were, and that their sales have really picked up in August.

No way you can go wrong as long as you tell the truth and that's what you did. Probably carries more weight hearing from an actual user who's actually towing a big trailer than if it's the standard "you can tow anything on the lot" with your (fill in the blank).

I would have done the same as you, so you did well! A well informed/educated RVer is a great resource. The reaction 'over there' is typical, and one of the reasons that this wonderful site exists!

Keep up the good work Image

I don't think there are too many responses to it; it's under Towing (mods moved it there) and the title is something like "helping sell a camper".

It's difficult to be anything less than enthusiastic about a topic you are so passionate as well as knowledgeable about. I'd have taken the guy aside and steered him right AND to these forums had the salesman been giving inaccurate info. Is it anything less than right (CHRISTIAN-sorry) or something you'd wish someone else would do for you ????????????

I think as a general rule, you stay out of it. I say that because if the sales person was a professional he would lead the buyer to reach the conclusion on his own. Obviously in this situation you assisted the dealer / sales person in moving the sale forward and no harm was done. I know it’s almost a sport to beat up sales people on RV related forums but this is how they make their living and needs to be respected.

I think it is somewhat a responsiblity to help out newbies at campgrounds, so why not help them at the dealer.

I am another who believes what you did was perfectly helpful. If either had not appreciated your input or felt they were violated they would have made it known.
Kudos to you for helping another person join the ranks of RV'rs.

Think of the customer as family, isnt that what we are one big camping family that tries to help one another when in need?
Have a good one

Did pretty much the same thing last week at Tom Johnson. Walked in to get a part, and heard the salesman say. there he is. thats the guy I was talking about. He really liked his pup. I walked over a expounded on the advantages of owning a popup. Very nearly talked my self out of the TT, and back into a pup.
Any way. They are now the proud owner's of a Fleetwood popup.
You did great.
