Why do we do it

Unread postby mikhen on Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:13 am

We had a picnic here for my mom's b-day yesterday. We have 3 decks, a pool, fenced in acre, and the kids have a trampoline, swing sets, and plenty to do around here. My brother asked why we go camping when we have stuff here. I said it's the whole RV experience, the people you meet, being away, the relaxation, the whole outdoor experience that you wouldn't understand unless you do it yourself. I hope I summed it up for him. Is this the way we all feel about why we go RVing/camping?

Having a great house in a great location is pretty great (I'm guessing now) but it IS always in the SAME location with the SAME things to do. Nobody loves a great steak more than I do but SOMETIMES I'm hungry for something different like a taco, salad or hamburger. Yep, it's the change NOT because it's better.

In a way, it's the change. Change of routine, being away from the phone & home chores (mowing, etc.), from stuff you "have to" do vs stuff you "want to" do.

My summation: I like sleeping in my own bed but waking up to different scenery whenever I want. :)

Seems like whenever I'm home I'm working on something around the house.

My summation: I like sleeping in my own bed but waking up to different scenery whenever I want. :)

WE get the same question. We live in the mountains about 8 miles out of town, near the lake..have lake access.
We camp to get away from the grind of daily life.

Several years ago we sat down and talk about where we were going with retirement aproching. Had the American dream nice 3200 square foot house pool, decks,AND ALL the maintance that go with it. We sold the house, bought a condo, and after a job change bought our first travel trailer together. This was an Upgrade over the converted U haul I used before I met Janet. After a year we decided that Janet needed a slide and a inch or so more room over the 24 foot Zinger. This develop into a 36 Crossroads Cruiser with three slides. This five star camping, and it is great. we go out one to two times a month, from one night to seven nights. This last walk about took eight days and four different campgrounds would not trade this for anything.... I might sell the Condo and buy a Quonset Hut with that has all blacktop yard. To answer the question we do it because we can and love to.. ;) ;) ;)

Great question Mikhen! Why, why, why?

Well, we love the great outdoors from the mountains to the ocean, the desert and the rainforests. We spend 12 hours a day looking for wildlife to enjoy and photograph as well the landscape. We have never camped much just to sit around camp although we do a little of that now and then. We use our campsite as a headquarters for each new adventure to see as much as we can in each location. We don't have lot of toys like atv's or jet skis, or even kids still at home to share it.

We hope to get the kids involved with camping again and introduce our 2yr old grandson to the greatness of this country.

No matter where you call home, it is the "getting away" from it and everything there that does it for me. No lawn to worry about...no weeds that need pulling staring at you....just stars and campfires....relaxation! 8-)

I talked to a man last week at the campground we were at. Nice guy, asked me where I was from and I told him and asked him the same. He replied where he was originally from, but said now his home is parked over there, and pointed to a nice large fiver pulled by his newer one ton Dodge. We chatted about the usual topics for a bit (the weather, fuel prices, etc), and then he said, "People sometimes ask me if I ever get tired of camping. I always tell them I'm not camping, I'm living!" To which I added with a smile, "And it's a great way to live!" :D

I love just getting away, and look forward to each and every trip. I hope to be able to retire and full time myself some day like the nice gentleman I talked to down at the lake.

Some of the people you meet make it worth while not everyone has the same idea about camping but most of us are friendly, resectful and willing to lend a hand to our neighbor and that makes it worthwhile.
