While this was obviously operator error, I have to say that after looking at the pictures I am not too impressed with the construction of the bank awning either. That thing should have been built to withstand more of an impact than that. Had another car been under there it could have been much worse than it already was.

Thank goodness no one was hurt.

FYI - I already posted this in the 5th wheel forum, yesterday lunchtime. I also had included the news report. No one was hurt. It was a new 5er and the man and his 10 year old son scrambled out of the passenger door as the thing fell on them :o

I am glad no one was hurt. I have to agree that you have to be careful with things up there. I know I have had a few close calls with our trailer and it's length, remembering to take wider turns so I don't take out a street sign, post, etc.

I have to admit I am way concerned that the entire awning came down like that. There is no way I would of thought that the entire thing would of come down.

It may have been cute to watch but if it was mine I would of been sick. That awning was an accident waiting to happen and the bank was luckie no one was under it.

Okay guys...question here...
But this was posted on an NON Rv board, under the You tube's of the day.
I responded and left a comment...that I was surprised that the 5th wheel managed to bring that entire thing down and would wonder about the quality of construction.

Then someone responds that it would not have mattered what he hit, "Had he hit his garage or carport like that, the same thing would have happened."

I know that energy and physics and gravity all played a part. But I just don't understand how something that is suppose to be a solid brick and mortar would come down like that being hit by an RV.

Whoever that "someone" is doesn't know much about proper construction. We all know and can attest to the quality of RV construction, even the very best 5ver on the market should be no match for a properly constructed structure such as that bank awning. The roof of that thing was obviously very heavy, and was not properly supported. There weren't enough legs under it, and the ones that were there weren't anchored very well. It looked to me like a good 50 to 60 mph wind gust in just the right direction could have toppled it. Even a small car striking one of the weak supports could have brought that thing down.

Bad construction IMHO. Obviously the driver was at fault, but I believe the initial damage you see before the roof comes crashing down is all he should have sustained.
