Well, we're heading out for a month!

Unread postby PrivatePilot on Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:47 pm

After about 10 months of planning, saving, and the last 72 hours of hectic running around, we're just about packed and ready to roll tomorrow morning for our one month trip.

Heading from home (Toronto area) to Vancouver BC, and then back through the USA. Stopping at lots of places enroute with notable stops in Sudbury Ontario, Thunder Bay Ontario, Winnipeg Manitoba, Regina Saskatchewan, Calgary Alberta, Banff Alberta, Glacier NP Alberta, Vancouver BC, and on the US side, Yellowstone NP, Mt Rushmore...and whatever else we happen to bump into on the way home. :-)

For any members interested in following our adventure, the details of it at located HERE, and I plan on keeping a (hopefully) daily blog entry on my blog located HERE.

I'll be popping on the forum to check in whenever we happen to be somewhere with WiFi, but I'm apt to be missing for a few days at a time. I'm sure our trusty moderators will keep things running smoothly, though!

Can't wait - we roll in about 14 hours! Wooohoo!

Checking in from Thunder Bay - first time we've seen internet since Sault St Marie - not even cellphone service for the last 24 hours - northern Ontario can be really barren at times.

At the KOA in Thunder Bay for our first campsite night - boondocked on night one and two. The KOA is typically very parking-lotish where they have us, but it's only for one night so it'll do. Pool was 90 degrees, lots of water pressure at our site, and a pond within 20 feet of the trailer for the kids to play in.

Weather could be better, but so far all the rain we've been seeing has been hitting while we've been driving and thankfully holding off when we've stopped.

I'll be making blog entries this eve.

Hey everyone! Yaay for reliable WiFi at Yellowstone!

Yep, we made it. I've been updating the blog bit by bit over the last 24 hours and I should be caught up sometime later this evening.

Weather has been good. Yellowstone has been pleasant - warm through the day, cool at night. Had some rain today just after we left Old Faithful headed back to West Yellowstone, but it was short lived and then the sun came out. Skeeters are tiny compared to northern Ontario standards, but they make up for it in sheer numbers - holy crap!

We've experienced a TV issue (seriously leaking exhaust manifold gasket on the turbo side) which is going to strand us in town for a good part of tomorrow while it's in the shop. At least they were able to get the parts and I found a shop capable of doing the job as the leak was bad enough that it was causing a serious lack of turbo boost...which in turn was causing a lack of power and black smoke. I really didn't want to pull any more grades with it like this.

Alas, West Yellowstone is pretty neat and I think we'll do fine in the AM just puttering around town, and (crossing our fingers the job goes smoothly) we should have wheels again in the afternoon.

We pull out Thursday and head for Bay Bridge campground which is just south of Fishing Bridge. We'll putter over there (no rush) and enjoy what we see on the way.

More updates at the blog!

Yeah, I've heard that joke a few times. ;)

The tires were expected so they don't count, and the alternator wasn't unexpected, so I won't count it either.

The leaky manifold was unexpected.

Currently east of Detroit - haven't had any internet access since we left the Mount Rushmore KOA - we boondocked everynight with the exception of last night where we hit a (monsterous) RV resort in Jackson MI. The holding tanks were all full to the brims, we were out of freshwater, and we all wanted to have nice long showers instead of the military ones we've been having, so it was time to stop boondocking and actually camp for a night.. hehe.

We're heading out shortly to check out a science center in Detroit and then probably going to stop somewhere about three hours from home to leave the last leg for tomorrow morning.

All pretty well so far. Boost gremlin persists on the truck (I'm thinking more and more that it's just a simple exhaust leak that the places I've dealt with didn't find) and the starter on the truck is acting up. Yeah, one gremlin after another - the joys of a 10 year old TV. ;) At least the starter issue is just a bad ground best as I can tell, but can't get at it to fix it on the road and it's not stranding us, so no biggie really.

Despite all the issues the money for repairs on the road so far, it equals less then one months payment on a brand new equivalent TV, so I'm going to keep looking at it from that perspective and be happy.

Hi Pilot,
From my calculations, you should have been home for a week? I hope the last part was trouble free. Did you update your blog, as I can only get thru July 5th I think. Is there more written? I need more info and photos for Yellowstone to plan our trip for next year.
