Absolutely! The manufacturer provides them for a reason - so as not to overload the unit. The axles and tires have specific ratings and could fail if overloaded.

There are some limits that I don't particularly concern my self with because they're only assigned by the manufacturer of the tow vehicle for warranty purposes. These are the maximum allowable trailer weight and the GCVWR (gross combined vehicle weight rating). The SAFETY related ratings for GVWR and GAWR I take very seriously as do I the weight rating of receiver and tires. Those are safety issues and I ALWAYS want to be safe.
