What's your pleasure. Interstate or Back Roads?

Unread postby skipnchar on Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:42 pm

Probably like most I'm prefer the back roads UNLESS I'm just trying to get somewhere. Most of the time though it doesn't matter where I'm going I enjoy the trip as much as the destination. Those Interstate highways are great for making time but you can travel from coast to coast and never see a thing in between. Going through a big metro area though and PLEASE get me on the Interstate. I can still remember traveling through Denver on Colfax Avenue (US 40) and it took half the day if you didn't hit heavy traffic. I took a short cut through Houston once with a 25 foot sailboat hitched to my bumper and THOUGHT I was going to have to buy a house there :D

Typically we express from A to B so we prefer the big roads. That's likely to change for at least our big trip this year where we might wander off the beaten path (14 coming east out of Yellowstone is a perfect example) so we'll see what happens.

The commercial driver in me always wants to make good time, so sometimes I find the plodding pace of the more rural roads a bit tedious, especially if you come into a town every 15 or 20 miles and have to slow down, stop at traffic lights, deal with those pesky pediestrians, etc. :D

I would agree also. However if going any distance DW is still working. With her business it is hard for her to take much time off at once. Maybe in the next year or two we would like to venture even further back East to Tennesse and that area. So we will have to get there on the interstates and find the back roads once we get there. ;)

It all depends on where I am going and what I am driving. When traveling for work I use the quickest way possible. When riding my motorcycle I try to use back roads to see all the beauty that is around me. When I have the camper in tow I try to use all of the above. I use a GPS so that if I find a road that is not paved or doesn't look good to tow down I can re-route myself on the go. I like to keep the camper on paved roads.

Thanks,
JOE

I believe the journey is part of the experience. Give me a well maintained US Highway or state road and I will love life. I actually like slowing down every now and then and seeing small town America. Besides, at my age you have to stop for a restroom every 2 hours anyway. LOL

Get to the vacation destination as quickly as possible for maximum enjoyment. The return trip home-take the slow road.

Back roads are a good choice if we are not crossing over the Appalacian mountains. Many of our destinations are about half highway and half rural roads. Our kids are getting old enough to know the difference. My seven year old is like having GPS. "Turn here Dad." or "That sign means only 20 more miles." Sometimes he remembers a turn before I do!

We like the back roads so long as it is not a lot of stopping and starting.

If I'm exploring, I'll take the secondary highways. If I'm going somewhere, I'll take the primary highways. I would rather get there, and start enjoying my time.

I too prefer the quickest route when going and the scenic route while coming back. However, west of Denver they are pretty much the same! :)

Normally I am pressed for time unlike my retired friends in above posts, so I use the quickest route, I look forward to the days I can just stop because..........

If I had my druthers, I would go back roads but until Goody Two shoes retires we don't have the time and us the freeways.

Now being a bit more gas conscious I look for the shortest route. I drive slower off interstate which also saves a little on gas

There's so much more to see on the back roads, but as we all know, you can run into some tight spots pulling a trailer behind you. I always worry about underpasses, village intersections, dare devil "passers", etc. Although I'd like to do more of the back road excursions, I stick to the boring interstates for safety and speed.

We travel mostly interstates and also some back roads, but have found a lot of back roads that I wish I wouldn't have taken, I guess it all depends on the shortest route to get me there.

I would rather drive back roads but it does make the truck work harder. that equals more gas.

I'll take a back road anytime.....never that much of a hurry. Besides I live in Calif.....most don't know how to drive and the freeway is a free-for-all!

Interstate or quickest way to get to destination. We unload and do our sight seeing on the Harleys once there. Stay as long as we can then quickest way home. Main reason is that it's a long way to get to somewhere that's worth seeing from where we live.

When I don't have to be at a destination by a certain date I prefer the back roads. Sometimes a good destination requires advanced reservations and this will determine travel time and Interstates are the easiest to maintain a steady pace.

Backroads. I enjoy finding a shorter route (not necessarily faster)using backroads on the map and it makes it much more relaxing for me.
