Anyhow who's looked at my TV might be wondering why we've waited until now, but that's another story. :)

We're probably going to go look at a 30' Keystone Cougar tomorrow evening. Price is right, looks (from the pics) to be in good shape (it's a few years old) so we'll see. Triple rear bunk is a big deal for us, as well as the super slide with sleeping for 4 more there. Total capacity for sleeping is 9 which would be handy for some local trips with friends.

Lets see what happens...and what the bank has to say. :-)

Well, we went and looked at it tonight. We love the floor plan, and it shows really light use - plastic is still on the carpet and things like the sink/stove look like they've never even been used. One factory tag is still attached to the dinette cushion.

It's bizzarre - it's a 5 year old trailer and it it shows use in some areas, but absolutely zero use in others - almost as if it was used only for sleeping in, and absolutely nothing else.

Unfortunately it has some cosmetic damage on the passenger side exterior - I can't for the life of me figure out how they managed to do it, but the lower panel from the door area right to the back corner is scraped and dented. Needs four new tires as well.

I happen to know the co-owner of the RV dealer in question (I grew up with him) so I'm going to give him a call directly tomorrow morning and mull it over on the phone. The salesman indicated they could fix the damage, which would bring it back into play as it's otherwise a good trailer for the money and the fact it sleeps up to 9 (triple bunkhouse, dinette, and fold out couch, as well as the front bedroom) is a big plus - the the damage really trashes the appearance and definitely puts it completely out of contention as is.

Todays phone calls resulted in a price drop into something more attractive, but no budging on the damage other then an offer to fix it at-cost, which seems fair enough I guess.

The big question is...what's the cost. The lower trim panel from the steps/door right to the back corner needs to be replaced in it's entirety, and I'm concerned that it will then not match the front part as it will be new, and the front section would be faded from age...so both panels might need to be replaced.

Cost was "estimated" to be a few hundred bucks for the panels and a few hours labour. Hard to say if we're talking a $300 repair, or a $700 repair.

I've had body damage repaired in the past and have always gotten a firm quote, not an estimate. I think I'd be asking for something like that. When I had it done it was on a Filon sided vehicle that was painted and they matched the color perfectly. It was white and I assume they must have put some tint in the paint but not sure how it would have aged as we sold the vehicle shortly thereafter.

Problem was that the dealer in question wasn't an actualy Keystone dealer, so they didn't have any direct contacts to a parts catalog - they'd have to contact Keystone directly and inquire in that way, something that couldn't likely happen in an expeditious fashion at 3PM on a Friday when I last spoke to him. :)

I will be getting some exact quotes before pursuing it any further though. Like I said, if it's going to be a few hundred bucks including labour it's not a big deal, but if we're looking at $1000 the deal is off since it goes from being a good deal, to being an overpriced fixxer-upper.

Here's the TT in question:

If you look close you can see the crinkled panel just behind the stairs, with more damage at the rear corner.

Rear corner damage would concern me more than the side panel. If hit hard enough, even though it doesn't show, the whole trailer could be out of square....hard to say. Use caution PP. (My 2 cents) :|

True.. Force of habit. :)

I spent quite a bit of time looking at interior and exterior corners checking to see if there was any indication of frame damage and didn't see anything. The damage really just looks like sheet metal crinkling really and since there probably isn't anything behind this panel I'm sure that it didn't take much to wrinkle it.

We are going back today to take a second look and I'm going to insist the bring out a charged battery so that I can test things out more in depth. When we were there all that was plugged in was the 120 and the converter alone wasn't enough to run the slide, but I really want to pull in the slide and assess some more under and around that side of the trailer.

Back today for more inspection time...spent about 2.5 hours total with things.

Slide was in good operating condition with a freshly charged battery in place...no surprises there.

Definitely needs 4 new tires upon closer inspection. It looks like the previous owner really enjoyed turning sharply as it shows wear in the customary spots where tight turns would wear down fiver tires. No biggie there, I know I can get a good deal on a set of rubber.

A closer inspection of the sheet metal damage is looking more and more like the casualty of a picnic table meeting the side of the TT while someone was backing into a campsite - the light nature of the damage and the height it's at seems to fit with that scenario.

Awning is good, no leaks to be found, most of the interior shows very little wear overall.

We've made a tentative offer to purchase (verbal only) with the understanding that we will await a firm estimate on the repairs before commiting. It's looking like it'll be a few hundred bucks (no biggie) but if it's more then we must reconsider.

I suspect we'll know by the middle of next week.

On the OTHER hand I've always kind of smiled every time is read a post like "on my HTT should I check the water in the battery every month?" Kind of like there's really a difference between a battery on a hybrid over any other RV :D

Well, it's looking increasingly like this is a reality - we sold our Award TT this morning (although the buyer negotiated in a 600 kilometer delivery destination, but is covering my fuel) and with the conditional offer on the Fiver looking more and more like it's just formality at this point (damage repaired, a few other PDI items tended to) I think we'll be the proud new owners of a Keystone Cougar in the weeks to come.

Just in time for the season. ;-)

Ok, gotta ask: In what way?

Not ALL of them will go in that direction :D Sorry it's just an old inside joke with DW and I. When we purchased our new Rockwood and saw how big it looked I said we'd probably have to vacation in Maine every year because of the prevailing winds in Kansas (meaning we probably couldn't tow it INTO the wind). She told all our friends the trailer was only rated for travel in Maine and when it was time to come home we'd have to sell it and buy another when we got home. Pretty dumb eh? :D
