What the heck?

Unread postby The Wood Tinker on Tue Apr 08, 2008 12:00 am

Some screen names are pretty simple, but some are hard to figure.....
What does yours mean, where did you come up with it?

The Wood Tinker.....simple, I like to tinker with wood and at some point I'm going to have a web site for the stuff I make. Simple things really. Just stuff I've made around the house that my wife wanted. Her friends see it and want one so I figured what the heck. 8-)

The 1 car I've always been head-over-heals in love, lust, etc, etc with...a '66-69 AC Cobra. If I ever win the Powerball, I will have one, even if it's a "Kit Car". Guess I'll have to buy a ticket to have a chance to win though. Anyway, back to the story. My email is Cobra909, so I just use Cobra on all the forums. Oh, my second favorite is a '69 Mach 1 Mustang.
Yeah, I used to be a "cut me, I'd bleed Ford Blue"...that was until they screwed up the PS. :x

It's a repro - based on a 1988 Jaguar chassis - has the big Ford V8 - she's a doosie! He sold a Bentley to get her - but now he's also bought another Bentley (he collects classic cars).
Here she is....

...actually to be correct the wheel is on the right side - the original Cobras, made by AC are British cars. Carrol Shelby approached AC and asked if he could use a small block Ford V8 engine in the AC Ace chassis, producing the AC Cobra. Shelby needed a car that could compete with the Chevrolet Corvette in US sports car racing. The resulting Cobra was a very powerful roadster, and it is commonly blamed for the introduction of the 70 mph limit on British motorways, after a coupe version was caught doing 196 mph during a test run!

...and he put the steering wheel on the wrong side    LOL

The reason LA has no football team is that no one (Except me) is from LA, Therefore most all football fans have their team where they are from. I other words, no loyalty to support a home team. When the Raiders were here, they NEVER sold out a game

When I was in the Air Force had a friend from Lesters Gate WV. He was walking on top of a hill when he was a kid and got hit by an airplane. One side of his chest was still indented. So be careful up there.

My first start was as a shift-Captain on an Inustrial Fire Brigade in the factory I was working in. Started teaching there around 1984. About the same time I started teaching drills in my own local fire department. While I was Chief of my department in 1987-'91, I started helping-out some local instructors. Eventually, I went back to the Fire Academy and got my State (1995), then National (2000) Instructor's Certification, and worked my way through the system. In 2003 I was named NYS Instructor of the Year by the State Fire Chief's Association. With all of the time I spend on my FT employment, I don't have the evening hours to teach anywhere much as before, but I certainly enjoyed it! As I recall, Zinger was a student of mine in one of the first classes, if not THE first class that I taught (it was in the station where he's now a Chief)! I still help out with local weekend classes, and I spend one or two weekends a month teaching at the State Fire Academy or doing regional delivery of academy classes.

But then again, I probably did it for a COMPLETELY unrelated reason than you unmarried daughter might have! :D

As requested here it is, the name comes from an old Cary Grant, Leslie Caron movie, "Father Goose". It is kind of a joke between the better half and me, I have always worked maintenance in factories and kinda look biker like, Goody Two Shoes is a CPA. Suprisingly we do ride motorcycles. If you get a chance, it's a good movie.

The planes are basically the same with a few significant differences...if that makes sense. The Gunship is extremely heavy for a C-130. It is the most computer-intense aircraft in the world. The guns are computer aimed and fired. The gunners are on hand for reloading and clearing jams.

There is no room for cargo/passengers. Every available space is filled with ammo, guns (which extend far into the fuselage), crew stations, and equipment. There is a large compartment in the center of the aircraft called the BMC (Battle Management Center) where 5 to 6 crewmembers sit. They operate the sensors, fire control system, navigation, and electronic defenses. We fly with a crew of 13. Five officers, 8 enlisted.

Flight characteristics are similar to a Slick 130, but our heavy weight comes with some drawbacks. We are slow. We burn considerably more fuel than a Slick. Our service ceiling is lower. Our engine-out performance is very limited. During one deployment to Afghanistan we were flying in the northern mountains and were very heavy. We lost an engine and the remaining 3 couldn't provide enough thrust to keep us up. We started a slow descent through the mountains while weaving through gaps and valleys. We eventually found a suitable emergency field and made a safe landing. A Slick 130 would have been able to maintain altitude. If we lose an engine on take-off we're toast.

Cool - the C130 is DW's favourite aircraft. She worked the Dew Line in Greenland many years ago and flew in and out in 130's all the time :)

I hope they let her sit up in the cockpit and not those web seats in the back.

Gunship Guy: You have my utmost respect and admiration. I think she was in the webbing seats!

On edit = she just sent me this....
Actually I got to fly in the cockpit as well - quite awesome with all the “windows” at your foot level. And we flew on the C-130 with skis (out of Skenectady - not sure of the spelling - New York)

I'm familiar with the skibirds out of New York. A guy from my squadron is flying with them now. Their planes are being modded with 8-bladed props for increased thrust to help them push through the snow. Pretty cool.

The pic is of a Wyoming Air Guard C-130 going through testing at Edwards AFB. Same props used on the LC-130 skibirds.

Limey,

I just visited your website. Excellent! Especially the WWII era section. What you and Liane do with that group looks like a lot of fun. The pics of Liane dressed up reminded me of my mom who became a Navy nurse a few years after WWII ended. From an aviation standpoint, WWII saw some of my favorites airframes. Especially the P-51.

I noticed your 8th Air Force insignia on your website. My first assignment was flying the B-52G in SAC with the 8th AF. Believe it or not, we had a piece of equipment on the B-52 from the old B-17s. The bomb camera in the belly. It worked like a champ too. Our tail flash was the Triangle KImage from Kimbolton, UK. In fact, you can see it on one of the B-52 pics in my webshots link.

Anyway, thanks for posting all of those pics!

The website is woefully out of date and I have been working on a new one for the last 6 months or so - nowhere near ready to put out there yet! I don't think I've updated anything out there for about 5 years! We don't do the WWII living history anymore - unfortunately the owner of the planes we flew (2 -t6's, a C-45 and an L5) passed away and the group was pretty much grounded. I also decided that I was getting too old for it when a young kid at an air show in OKC came up to me (I was in my RAF Squadron Leader uniform) and asked me where I served in WWII

The group was formed to represent an 8th AF unit in the UK around D-Day, and being English I decided to be the RAF liasion officer. We had great fun for quite a few years. Now I just fly RC planes, take care of all the animals and go RV'ing!

You mention B52s. There is one called 'Diamond Lil' on display at the entrance to the AF Acadamey in Co Springs. I was lucky enough to fly out of the Springs in the other 'Diamond Lil' - a B24 that was/is owned by what was the the CAF. I flew in quite a few of their planes, including one memorable flight in a Jap Val dive bomber on the wing of a Mk9 Spitfire in Santa Fe, NM. :P

Liane had one of the best WWII nursing uniform collections in the country before we quit the shows - we got a tidy sum for it at the military shows.

Our screen name is my first name Kurt and my DW's Jan. Figured to keep it simple and to the point. Interesting reading indeed.

Gunshipguy I both respect and envy you in what you do. I love the C130 and I have been a pasenger a few times, and they have been memorable. When we have our airshow here the Airforce often brings a AC130 and it was awesome, I would hate to be on the recieving end of that firepower, I have heard that the sensors on that machine are fantasic. thanks for serving and happy belated veterans day to you and all those at Hurlburt Field. BTW is that a pic of your bird and is that a ghost with guns firing? Love that Spooky.

Thanks, Wolf.

The sensors are very good. We are currently testing new sensors which are even better. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of this plane either. If I was allowed only one word to describe this plane's firepower I would say "hellish".

All the pics in my webshots link are of planes I've flown with the squadrons I've been assigned to.
