Camping Activities??

Unread postby crazyaboutcampin on Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:20 am

Being retired I spend a lot of time camping. I am always looking for new things to do. I think my #1 is exploring. My extended hiking days are over but I have a small trail bike and a quad to assist me. Abandoned homesteads, gold mines and ghost towns are my favorites. One trip I HAVE to make this summer is where a pack string of gold miners were amushed and killed coming back from Montana. It is a 6 mile hike (no motors allowed) off a 4x4 trail. I think I can make that one OK. Last winter I bought a metal detector and am really anxious to try it out. I also set myself up with a laptop computer and map program to integrate with my GPS. I can take it right into the field with me and see exactly where I am. Amazing!! #2 would be fishing. Any kind. Creeks, streams or lakes. I have a small boat for lakes. Bass and kokanee are my favorites. Wish we had some walleye around here!!! If the weather turns sour I will grab a book, non fiction, of the Old West or plug in a movie. What are your favorite things to do?

LIke you, we used to do a lot of backpacking but the old joints won't stand up to it any longer so we just do day hikes. I'd LOVE to explore ghost towns and the like but even better are to just scenic locations like water falls, or canyons. Some of our FAVORITE locations are in the Sawtooth wilderness and along the Salmon River. We're also National Park fanatics of sorts with our favorites being Glacier, Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain Parks. DW says that I have a natural attraction to "crooked and steep" roads and the KING is "Going to the Sun".

I USED to fish quite a bit but I've gotten a bit restless and have a problem sitting still long enough any more. As I get older I guess I'm afraid there'll be some places I don't get to see so I'm in a hurry. I gotta stop that :D

We mostly camp near water so we can use our kayaks. Last year we also bought a 14' Zodiac inflatable with a 15hp outboard. This boat is easy to haul (deflated, it stores in the bed of the pickup), only takes 10 minutes to inflate and we are ready to go. The kids love tubing behind it, going for boatrides and fishing.
Also enjoy the hiking trails and walking around the campground to see the different trailers and setups.
Favourite activity has to be laying in the hammock with a nice cold beer!

Our three favorite activities are playing on the lake in the boat, taking the dogs (4 of em) on long walks and sitting round the campfire with our camping friends/neighbors having a chat and a few beers.

Welcome Crazyaboutcampin, We have family near you in Nampa.

When we go camping, we like to explore, seek out wildlife, nature stuff, short hikes or walks on semiflat ground. Tried fishing this last weekend for 1st time in about 25 yrs. We also like campfire in evening and just enjoying the peace and quiet and smells of being outside of the usual. The rest we will make up as we get into this retirement gig. Some of these ideas sound intriguing.

I just love getting up in the morning, going out to the picnic table with a cup of hot coffee, and sitting back and enjoying the morning come to life.

Then, through the day we generally entertain ourselves with whatever the campground has to offer - pools, beach, playground, whatever. I quite enjoy just walking around the park and checking out other rigs and socializing with anyone who might say "hi" along the way. The kids usually find lots to do independently for the most part now that they're old enough to be "set free" for short periods of time alone. :)

Evenings are spent around the campfire with the kids anxiously cooking as many hotdogs and marshmallows as they can get away with.

Where we like to camp is where we are able to ride our atvs, thats our main source of activities, and would like to take a trip to the north shore of Minnesota and walk the shore of Lake Superior looking for agates. And just relaxing for a weekend is also real nice.

Fishing is my favorite pastime. It doesnt matter what type of fishing (drowning worms, fly fishing, or dredging "trolling"). My Wife and I enjoy hiking with the dog. Its really hard to beat relaxing by the campfire.

We like to read, relax, enjoy the nature around us, nap on occasion (especially DH), and walk around the CG & check out other rigs. I'm more social than DH, so I'll occasionally stop to talk with somebody else in the CG. I also like to plan future camping trips! Not that we'll ever take many of them - just not enough time to do ALL of it - but it's still fun to think about.

With the three kids, we always take along some model kits or crafts for the kids. Plastic cars, wooded airplanes, necklaces, bracelettes are all good activities for the kids. They love to spend time with Mom & Dad talking and creating stuff.

Swimming, Biking, Boating, playing Washers, and hiking are all things we like to do also.

I like to camp on bodies of water so I can boat. I've used a Porta-bote in years past, but I recently bought a Saturn inflatable that takes my 25 hp outboard. It is sure a lot faster.

i like to lay in the hammock, by the fire and read, nap and read, nap and read. If I have to. I'll get up and go to the bath house. But I fight it, and If I have too. I'll get up and get something to eat. I fight that too, as it takes away from the hammock beside the fire and the river, and the nap time.

I really am a lazy camper.
