Cleaning EPDM rubber roof

New postby fla-gypsy on Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:18 pm

What is everyone using to wash their EPDM rubber roof? I have been using Spic n Span but looking for something that will clean more effectively without damaging the compound.

I use "Dawn" and its OK. Probably not any better than "Spic-n-Span".

I've been using Spic and Span with good results. I'm not sure if there is anything out there that will get everything off. At least not without damaging the roof in the process.

If you have a stain that is not coming off the roofs manufacturer suggests DAMPENING a cloth with mineral spirits and lightly rub the spot. They ALSO caution to never put the mineral spirits directly on the roof. Two things that are specifically warned against are the improper use of mineral spirits and ANY use of a product that contains petroleum distillates. Either of these products can cause the adhesive used to attach the roofing material to the substrate to loosen causing bubbles in the roof and will possibly void any roof warranty.

I've always used Spic n Span on my roofs because it was recommended but I've known others who claim that Simple Green does a better job. I've never read the ingredients of Simple Green so I'd advise that it be done before using it.

My roofs are NEVER sparkling white but if anyone asks to see my trailer I NEVER take em on the roof so I don't care ;)

My dealer sekks a cleaner called Korkay it works quite well.
To clean awning mix lemon dish detergent and bleach with a little water brush on wet awning and roll up for 15 minutes roll our brush again and rinse. this works very well for very dirty awnings it might take a couple of times. make sure to rinse both sides of awnings.
Have a good one

I've been using Dawn also on my Vinyl roof. It does a good job.

milzat, when Dawn finishes with yours, send her my way. Does she also do washes and waxes??

I use regular car wash soap and it does a good job. I also apply 303 protectant after it is dry. This stuff really does a good job of keeping the white stuff to a min and also helps prevent those nasty stains. Makes cleaning a lot easier.

I would be VERY careful putting 303 on your EPDM roof because it contains petroleum distillates. EPDM roof manufacturer says that use of anything containing petroleum distillates will void the roof's 12 year warranty, as it penetrates the roofing material and causes the adhesive to release the material from the substrate. If you notice on their web site they do NOT recommend it for use on roofs. Good luck / skip

Skipnchar,

I am definitely not trying to disagree with you or start a rukus, but the statement or 303 is not the fact. I started usuing 303 when I bought my boat because it did not contain Petrol Dist. After I saw just how good the stuff was I started usuing it on a lot of other stuff as well. When we bought our TT I researched again and found that although not as a UV protectant but as a stain preventer it was recomended. Here are two links that I will plead my case with.http://www.303products.com/tech/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=60&CFID=13005733&CFTOKEN=68914041 http://www.303products.com/tech/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=323

Again I am not trying to case trouble just stating a case.

I stand corrected about the 303 provided it actually does NOT contain petroleum products. I had previously checked their web site under RV uses and on the page I looked at it did not include roofs. Upon NOT being able to confirm the absence of petroleum distillates I assumed they were not considering it to be suitable for use on roofs. There are MANY products on the market that are actually RECOMMENDED for roofs, by their manufacturer, that DO contain the forbidden ingredients and often cause users warranty issues but apparently 303 is not one of them. Happy RVing / Skip
