How many more sleeps???

Unread postby The Rock on Thu Mar 25, 2010 10:06 am

Just thought I would put this out there it is 56 more sleeps and counting until the May 24 weekend. The time is near to think about batteries in all the detectors in the camper and other thing you will need to start out the season right. With most of the snow gone and the fiver siting in the driveway. I gess getting the fiver late in the season and only using it twice last season you might say I am just a little excited to go camping. Not quite as excited as my DS who is three and has his toys packed up since Christmas waiting for the snow to go. Now I am trying to explain to him that the parks around here in Newfoundland do not open until the May 24 weekend or just before.

Lyrics
(CHORUS)
It's the 24th of May and we likes to get away
Up in the woods or going out the bay
There's all kinds of places but the place we likes to get
Is up on the highway in the gravel pits

We loves to go out in the good old gravel pits
We loves to go out there when life gets smelly
We can spray paint our names on the face of the cliff
Go up to the Irving for a coke and chips

Hitches up the camper and out of town we go
Out on the highway with everything in tow
The dog is in the back seat and Grandfather's drunk
Youngsters in the trailer and the wife is in the trunk

(CHORUS)
It's the 24th of May and we likes to get away
Up in the woods or going out the bay
There's all kinds of places but the place we likes to get
Is up on the highway in the gravel pits

John is coming over and Sue and Henry too
We polish off a bottle and a pot of moose stew
We tell a few stories, an awful lot of lies
Green boughs on the fire to keep away the flies

The youngsters gets excited then they starts to bounce and jump up
When we piles in the car and goes up to the dump
It's cheaper than the movies so we all sits and stares
Up by the garbage b'y you're lookin at the bears

(CHORUS)
It's the 24th of May and we likes to get away
Up in the woods or going out the bay
There's all kinds of places but the place we likes to get
Is up on the highway in the gravel pits

We flies a Newfie flag on an old spruce pole
And drowns a few worms in a tractor mud hole
Then listens to the radio we plays it good and loud
A scoff on the Coleman stove is bound to draw a crowd

When the weekend's over and we're headed back to town
A half inch of sloppy snow lying on the ground
A hundred dollars poorer, who wants to be rich
We just had a lovely time out in the pits

(CHORUS)
It's the 24th of May and we likes to get away
Up in the woods or going out the bay
There's all kinds of places but the place we likes to get
Is up on the highway in the gravel pits
Is up on the highway in the gravel pits

My guess is about 1985 or 1986. Kevin/Buddy was a part of "Free Beer" in 1984, when I first saw him on stage. Certainly these 3 guys have been Buddy Wasisname for a long long time.

& BTW for the buyers, the site given above now has links to a recording and options for purchasing albums of Buddy's.

Ah, the gravel pits!
Growing up, never had the 'pleasure' of camping in a gravel pit. But now I hear it's illegal ?? or going to be ?
I would like to one of these days.....just to say I've camped in a gravel pit.

The song is fine

On youtube is better because the video size is better. Actually, I'd like an image bigger than youtube.

& that's why I never bother trying to embed a video.

Thanks.
