I guess I didn't realize how lucky I am

Unread postby Mike in Calgary on Tue Feb 16, 2010 2:13 am

Since we were enjoying a long weekend, we decided to pack the kids in the truck and head out to Banff National Park for a day trip. Banff's only about an hours drive from Calgary and we sort of take it for granted because its always been there for us. We cruised out to Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake (They're co-joined), took in the winter scenery and let the kids play on the ice heading before into Banff townsite. Once we got into town we stopped quickly for lunch, went and did a bit of shopping and headed for Sulphur Mountain for the gondola ride up to the top. The weather was spectacular for this time of year with temperatures just above freezing and almost no wind, even at the to of the mountain. The kids really wanted to go to the hot springs, but since it was a long weekend, they were extremely busy so we passed on them and went out for supper after we climbed around on the frozen over Bow Falls.
While waiting for supper and while walking around town afterwards, I noticed that there was a lot of people in town that were speaking foreign languages (French, German, Swedish and a lot that I couldn't identify) and it suddenly struck me that most of these people were probably in Banff on a once in a lifetime trip to someplace that is right in my own back yard. It then dawned on me that we didn't appreciate it as much as we should.
I know I have a post in the Canada section complaining about the fees that are charged by Parks Canada, but we bought an annual park pass and we are now starting to plan our summer holiday around Banff and Jasper National Parks. I guess what I save on gas in the truck will offset the camping fees for summer holidays in two of the world's great national parks.
So after all of this, what's the big attraction in your area and why should we make plans to go there?
There is no such thing as a bad day camping.

I need to get out more. Great pics. There are many things here, but I've been to them so many times, we don't even take a camera anymore.

Great pics! Makes me miss home all the more. ;)

Took a trip to Calgary a few years ago and visited Banff while we were there (Lake Louise). What a beautiful area! Will have to go back again sometime.

My favourite place to camp would have to be Gros Morne. :)
The picture of my truck in my sig was taken ontop of Kelly's Mountain on the way to the ferry during one trip back home in 2008.

I also did a tour of the Rockies a few years back, spending a couple of weeks exploring Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise and Kananaskis. Have to say it was one of my most enjoyable vacations!

As Little Kopit shows so well, the Atlantic Provinces also have their gorgeous sites. While I like all my vacations, my very favorites are still here at home in Newfoundland and Labrador. I try to never take it for granted!!

Best place to boondock in Canada: Newfoundland and Labrador.

Least amount of land for boondocking in CA: PEI.

We went thru Jasper and Banff last summer and it was AWESOME. I've seen pics of the mountains, and I have to say that the pics don't do them justice at all. It gives me goose bumps every time I think about them.
We didn't have a lot of time to spend there ( son's wedding in Edmonton ) but hope to spend a lot more time there in a couple years. Heck, we might even take the 5er out there.
Here are a few pics that we took.
