Thanks. :P

For the record I'm still busy behind the scenes.. Currently our hosting seems to be holding up well to the current load on the site, as it should be for some time to come due to our relatively small size.

However, when (if) growth gets to the point where server load becomes an issue there's a contingency plan in place and ready to activate within 24 hours. When the time comes to throw the switch we'll be running on a vastly more powerful server with large resource limits - the ability to easily host a thousand members or more online at a time will be there, so even during peak load times the site should remain fast.

We're ready for the growth. Bring it on. :)

I agree. PP has done a great job with this site. It's already become my site of choice. I only check the "other" forum after checking this one first!!

I have to admit that when I first started signing on to this forum I found myself kind of "holding my breath" and anticipating the spinning wheel and error message that I usually get "across the road" on their site LOL. Now when I DO go over there I'm surprised when there's a problem. Gotten spoiled I guess. :D

Well, the first night we see a few hundred or more members online here at peak times, then you can be impressed. :)

I'd be curious to know what sort of load the 'other place' is getting so far as members online at once. With the software we use it's as simple as looking at the bottom of the index page to see who's online, but over there there's no indication.

One thing I've noticed over there is that there is a surge of problems about the time the East Coast gets off work and another when the West Coast gets off work. I've always ASSUMED it was because of the load on the forum. I'm betting it's a pretty high number during those times.

Does this mean that we'll get 100 names listed at the bottom when there are 100 folks on line here, or is there some sort of limit which will turn on a sort of 'Click Here to See Who's Online" link? Just curious (and nosey, so my DW says - comes from my days as a moderator of (what was then a fledgleing) MSN forums!

There's no limit on how many it will show.

For example, over at phpbb.com (the support board for this forum software) there's currently over 1300 people online:

http://www.phpbb.com/community/

I've seen some forums with 5000+ members online at a time running phpBB.

That's all but guaranteed to be the problem, coupled with forum software that really isn't the latest and greatest at load handling.

I'd be really curious to know what the concurrent number of members online is when the problems begin, though.

Hummm...I was on the RV.NET forum just now (10:00 AM CDT) and all portals just crashed. Hard to imagine that mid morning on a Monday would be a "high traffic" time period for em. Maybe folks going on their coffee break at work?

What never made sense to me is there were times I couldn't get in through Good Sam's site, but I could through RV.net or Woodall's. Or can't through RV.net but could through Good Sam, etc. You get the point.

Yeah I've seen that on a lot of occasions too. Sometimes it seems to be one of the portals that gets overloaded and crashes and other times it's the main server. I suspect sometimes it may be a hardware crash and others it's a software issue.

They have big problems and have for some time. Hard to believe they can't identify and fix it. More like they don't want to invest the resources to get it done.
