04 F-150 HD for me. I ALMOST traded for a diesel last fall but with that liquid gold selling for almost $4.00 a gallon I'm loving the little truck more and more.

As long as they have the same reliability I'd be happy depending on the details.

1995 Dodge Ram 1500 Regular Cab 4x4 5.9L Magnum 360. She likes the fuel, but my wallet liked the price of this truck compared to my newer 2004 Dakota that I sold. I will likely be keeping this truck for a couple more years. It only has about 66,000 actual miles on the odometer and runs great. I do wish it was a quad cab though.

LOL I just wish I had 66,000 miles on the clock. Where'd you find a jewel like that? We travel with a friend who has a 96 F-350 and he's only got 50 something thousand on his Ford. He razzes me all the time about me driving an "older vehicle". :D

Actually I found it at my local Dodge dealer. It was owned by an older farmer who had all maintenance performed at the dealership so they had extensive records on the truck. The only reservations I had when I bought it was the fact that the truck may have sat too much without being driven. But I have had it over a year now and have had no issues so I guess it will be fine. I only put 8000 miles on it in the 13 months I have driven it, but thats a lot more than the 4800 or so a year the previous owner averaged! :D

1 Ton Chevy dually crewcab with the thirsty 6.5 Turbo Diesel.

Gets very respectable towing milage (just a touch over 13MPG hand calculated), but as a daily driver it leaves allot to be desired. :)

We have a 2001 GMC Yukon 2500. We got lucky finding the 3/4 ton. We bought the trailer and crossed our fingers. Kind of like the cart before the horse type thing.

2002 Chevy Avalanche 2500. 8.1 Liter 3/4 ton. Just about every camping trip someone comes up to me and asks how an Avalanche can pull a big trailer. So I have to explain it's a 2500. Most people never knew they made a 2500 AV. Then comes the question...how is it on gas. My answer... I didn't buy it for gas mileage. The low miles and low price is what got my attention on this truck. It had 19800 miles when I got ir and I just hit 40000. I'll have it for a while.

Man what a great looking website! We tow our 5th wheel with an '05 Hemi powered 2500HD Ram. Does a fine job around the southeast. At almost 80k miles, it's been trouble free with the exception of a condenser cooling fan that I replaced myself. After four Cummins powered Rams, I bought the Hemi Ram mostly out of curiosity to see if the little faux Hemi is all Chrysler says it is. It is...

Looking at your Avitar and it appears someone has dumped some "soap suds" next to your trailer. What's with all that white stuff and how can we get rid of it :D

I don't have a tow vehicle. Basically I borrow something whenever I'm planning on moving it. We are starting reasonably slow and using it in one spot for most of the summer, only moving it 6 times. When I do move it, it's with a chevy silverado 2500 HD. Waaaaaay overkill, but it'll move the sucker. My trailer is only a 23 foot lightweight.

SkipnChar,
The picture in the Avatar was taken late April last year, the day I brought the trailer home from the dealer for the first time. You don't even want to know how much of the white stuff is piled around it right now!! To make it worse, the forecast is for another 6-8 inches tonite and tomorrow. It'll be the long May 24th weekend before we get out for the first trip of the year.

Love my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab w/Cummins. Get around 23 mpg with my normal driving and 13 to 14 mpg when pulling the Prowler which is a heavy trailer. The diesel is great except for the cost right now. With the mpg that I am getting I believe I am still ahead over a gasser. We think the mega cab is great when taking others along...like first class seating in an airplane.

I must be the Neanderthal here. I'm still towing with a 1978 Chev 1-ton dually with a 454 and 4.10s. It just turned 67,000 miles last summer, so it must be about wore out now, huh?

I would love to have a new diesel, but this one's paid for and will pull anything I put behind it. Kinda hard to argue with success. And I've had it so long now, selling it would be like selling a child.

Nice website here. Since stumbling on it the other day I've thoroughly enjoyed reading through the forums.

Normal driving I get between 9 - 11 mpg. I really don't drive this truck except to bring my kayak to the water or tow the TT, I drive a work van all the time so I just run my errands while I'm out working. When I towed the TT to the Keys I set the cruise control at 60mph and I got 9 mpg all the way there (about 200 miles) While in the Keys I actually got a monumental 15 mpg which I have NEVER seen and I've owned this truck since new. If you've never been to the Keys you absolutly can not get over 35mph and in general you will be cruising at 20-25 mph so I figure that was the basis for the better mileage. The speeds that truck usually drives when in my home town are 55-60mph non highway.

My TV is a Chevrolet 2500HD work truck with crew cab and 6 1/2 foot bed. Translated: work truck = no options. No power locks/windows, no carpets, etc. It has the 6.0L gas engine with 4spd auto. It is plenty of truck for my 7000lb max trailer. I am probably under 6000 loaded. I have a company car so it is not a daily driver.

I did add three nice options after I got it home. First was a nice fiber glass shell from ARE to keep my gear safe and dry. It has 'win-doors' on the side so I can reach in and grab items from the side, but can still vent the windows when my canine friend is in the back. Next came Westin running boards on the side so DW could get in and out without my help. And finally, I added a 'Bed-Rug' bed liner to keep all things in the back nice and comfy.

Sounds like a really nice set up. I had a Bed Rug in my last truck and really loved it. I had a Line X sprayed in the current one and have regretted it from day one. It tears up my knees and is slick enough that nothing stays put like it did with the Bed Rug. Next time I'll be back with the Bed Rug again.

I tow a 22' thor Summit (4000# dry) with a 2000 Dodge Ram Van 2500 5.2L / 3.92 Gear. I don't now what my MPG is, but it works great for me.
Downside - No side windows in the van to help in backing
Upside - I can see the ball with the rear doors open for hooking up.
I can load firewood, firepit, generater etc. in the van

I don't see alot of Van drivers in the forums or on the road, is something wrong with using a van that I am not unaware of??? :o

I know several people who are towing sizable trailers with a van and they like it a lot. They tell me they're less costly than using a truck with the about the same versatility for carrying cargo. Seems like a very practical application to me. I DO have a couple of small side windows in my truck but they're useless for trying to actually SEE out of. I back using only my side mirrors anyway. It's a lot easier on my old neck than trying to twist around backwards LOL

I have considered using my work van for a tow vehicle cause it will be more comfortable for my dog. A few pluses to it would be I have a sat nav system with back up camera in the van and if I ever have a problem I'll have plenty of tools to fix the problem. The down side is the van gets 9mpg before towing and I'll be willing to bet it will drop by 3mpg if I hook up the TT to it.

Why such low milage? The worst I got on my PU all winter was 11 (a perfect-storm combination of low-cetane winter diesel, short drives, and many fuel guzzling cold starts), but on average I get about 18MPG unloaded city/highway mix.

I'm getting just over 13MPG towing, which is why I really find your MPG quotes odd.

I do like the bed rug. I even had a friend of mine order it through his body shop so that I could get the Chevy Bow Tie logo instead of the bed rug logo! :D I thought long and hard about one of the spray-in liners, but decided for a covered bed that does not work too terribly hard, the bed rug would be good.

That 6.0 liter is a gas guzzling pig, I have 2 of them. One is a 2007 3500 Chevy chassis cab SRW van with 4:10 gears and a 6.0L that gets between 9 and 10 mpg consistently, then I have the 2003 GMC with the 6.0L and 4:10 gears that gets 9-11 mpg depending on how I drive. I think it really has to do with driving style, our speed limits (in town) are 45-55mph and that's stop and go. When I was in the Keys I got 15mpg but I couldn't get over 35mph the entire time there. All of these mpg figures are NON towing

I've got an 04 Chevy 2500 HD crew cab 4x4. It has the 6.0 gas engine with 4.10 gears. When I first bought it, it had original size tires and according to the trip computer the best I ever got was 16 running empty. I went up one size in tires when I had to replace them about 6 months ago. Since then I've only been able to get 14 at best according to the trip computer. With the original tires I could pull my work cargo trailer and get 8.5 MPG but now only get 7.5. I think the different size tires have messed with the trip computer. My dad is a Chevy mechanic and I keep meaning to go by and have the computer calibrated to the proper size tires just haven't done it yet. Pulling my 5'er I get about 7. I've got a problem with the way it runs and were trying to diagnose it but it's being a bugger to find. It misses at idle but not all the time. I can't tell if it misses running down the road but if it does that's killing my gas mileage too.

Big Dave, I don't know about the computer but changing to a larger-than-OEM tire will react the same as changing your 4.10 into probably somewhere in the 4.50s. Likewise, a smaller tire would probably put you in the 3.73 range. Big tires may look better but there is a tradeoff.
When all else fails, read instructions.

I think you've got that reversed. going to a LARGER tire (bigger circumference) will actually give you a HIGHER gear ratio so the large tire would raise the ratio to something like 3.73 from a lower 4.10.

All I know is both of my 6.0 liter trucks drink fuel like nobody's business, I try to keep my driving habits light but it's hard with the speed limits we have here.

We have a 07 Silverado 1500crewcab, 5.3,with 3.73. I will get photos on here asap when I have an hour to read all the instruc I have to do so.

I thought I had heard/read that larger tires and wheels would actually lower the posted tow capacities on a truck? Like going to 20" wheels, wide larger tires and a lift kit? My son has done all the above but I think it actually reduced his tow capacity.

Yep that's correct. The larger circumference of the tires effectively raises the gear ratio which lowers the towing power and most tow RATINGS. Of course it is possible to then CORRECT this by changing the gearing in the differential to get it back again.

Towing with a 2005 Chev Silverado, CC, Duramax / Allison. Have a Fold-a-Cover and Line-X bed liner. Towed our 5th wheel from Ottawa to Orlando and back in Nov/Dec, averaged 11 MPG which is much better than my previous truck (2005 Chev Silverado CC, 6.0l).

Currently we have a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with a 4.0 L and 4 wheel drive to tow our 2007 17' Hi-Lo.
Previously we had a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD crew cab with the 8.1 L gas towing a 25' 5th wheel. We had the big truck because we were thinking about moving up some time to a larger 5th wheel, but after re-evaluating what we really needed and seeing the price of gas start to shoot up we decided to go smaller. Last year we got a 1976 13' Boler (they are no longer made but looks like the 13' Scamp) and started to use it but decided that it was just too small.
We just recently got both this truck and trailer and are looking forward to our first camping trip with the new combination.

I'm using a 2001 1500 Z71 with the 5.3 and the 3.73 rear. My camper is about 3600lbs dry. Loaded with the DW, three kids, bicycles, wood, and gear I'd be surprised if we were over 5000lbs. It tows really nice and I am very happy with it. I walk to work so I only have about 58,000 miles on it.

Next is a duramax/allison dually for a big fiver...

I flew down to Phoenix last Friday to help my camping buddy drive the Duramax/Allison Dually (2006) that he just bought, back to Denver (he found it for $12K below Blue Book - but it looks brand new - the owner was 'retiring' from RVing and priced it (and his toy-hauler) low to get a quick sale - what a bargain!. I have to say that I was VERY impressed with it. 1000 miles and we averaged 14.8 mpg. It was smooth as silk and the allison transmission is a treat. Was a fun couple of days!

Yeah, the Allison transmission is great. Some have said that the Cummins/Allison combo would be the ultimate. I hear that the 2008 duramax is a real beast, and quiet.

Last fall we bought a Crossroads Cruiser CT32SB. It is 35 feet long and weighs 7500 lbs dry (yeah right)> I am figuring 9000 lbs. At the time I was near the end of a lease on a great F 150 so now I have a 2008 F250 4 WD, FX4, V 10, 4.10 Axle with the Tow Command system. The power folding mirrors are awesome, especially when I am parking in a structure or in my garage. I have weighed out my truck with my kids, full tank of gas but my wife was not with me. This weekend will be the first time I pull my new trailer. It is stored (at the dealer) right next to the campground we go to and last year they towed it twice to the lot for me--no charge. This Friday they are going to set up my hitch and then I am going to find a Cat scale and weigh it out.

My vehicle, which I posted earlier, is a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. For those of you who may have the opinion that my truck is not a 'REAL' truck as compared to what most of you are using, let me reinforce that thought. When I first got this truck I thought that it had a vinyl bed liner. After a closer look, I discovered that it is not a liner that I was seeing. There is no metal box under it. The whole back part of the truck body between the cab and the back bumper is an all pastic unit bolted to the frame.

In 1995 i bought a"new" to me 1977 1ton[see sig].It had a recent paint job,new interior, alcoas,a rebuilt tranny & a Goodwrench crate engine. The real reason though that i bought it was[u have to live in california to appreiate this] It had no smog equipment & was completely legal.I could actually see the engine.

I susspect that it has about 200,000 more miles than Curmudgeon's but it is a sweet ride espicially since i added 6 way power seats.Milage is 10 towing, 13 around town.It badly needs another paint job,but even w/ that i doubt that anyone can match our low cost per mile.No new trucks or diesel in my future.

Towing with a diesel baby!

Unread postby antiqfreq on Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:55 pm

Two years ago this month we purchased a used Ford F250, 7.3L diesel, crew cab, short bed, 4x4, Lariat.
and just 2 1/2 months ago we purchased a new fifth wheel.

The truck had 82,000 miles on it then but just turned 100,000 miles last month.

We have a 14K Pullrite SuperGlide hitch, Firestone ride rite air bags with the compressor/gauge.
Also put 3 gagues, ISSPRO, above the mirror.

So far NO problems - and we just love this truck.

Another one of the (so far) few 07 Tundras here. Bought it last year on Memorial Day - we had to order it and wait 6 weeks until they found one coming off the line that mostly matched what we wanted. ;) Pulls our 5000# (loaded) HTT very sweetly, and will now get more of a test, as we will be trading in for a 7700# (loaded) 33' TT. Nice truck - so far we're very happy with the performance. 5.7L engine, 4.30 axle, 6-speed tranny produces about 15 mpg daily driving average, about 12.5 mpg towing average (with the 5000# trailer), about 19 mpg highway on cruise control. Can't complain!

I used to beat speeding tickets in OLD days by claiming speedo was out. Would change to bigger tires & get tested. This Slows down the speedo which would give the illution of lower MPG. Beat the ticet BTW

I just turned 11K miles and she's getting 18.5mpg average unloaded (haven't taken a long enough trip to calculate just highway) and 12.5 mpg towing our 30SK(this was on a 300 mile one way trip at 6K on the odo).

You guys with your crossroads trailers are sure making me want one. Everytime i see one on here i go lookup the model and floorplan. We have a dealer 30 miles from home, and i love driving by, if i stop i might pull one home. Keep those pics of all trucks and trailers coming, this is an awsome page. :P

I addressed your comments on the "other" website, but I don't know if you saw them or not.

The Silverado will surely do a better job as the 6.0L Chevy is more powerful than the old 360, and the 4.10 gears will do better than the 3.55s with oversize tires you had on your Ram. A newer Dodge Hemi with 4.10 gears would have done better as well. But I read your comments on the other site, you dismissed your Dodge as a piece of junk so I guess your emotions steered you away from giving a newer Dodge equipped with the right tires and better towing gears a chance. Good luck with your new tow vehicle, I hope it performs up to your expectations.

Meanwhile, my old Dodge tows my 6000 to 7000 lb loads just fine. Sure it is slower than the newer, more powerful trucks, but it gets the job done. If I may ask, just how much did your trailer weigh behind that 1/2 ton Ram?

1995 Ford E 350 that had a cargo box on it which I removed and installed a Western Star sleeper. I then made the rear deck. It's a heavy truck approaching 8000 pounds. I used 2 by 2 1/8 square tubing for the deck and then lined it with 1/8 steel panel. I can lift the side of the truck with a forklift if I need to change a tire lol.

Had the transmission rebuilt a year ago with 200 k on the odometer, new front tires this year and a complete brake job. Truck had 210 K now and I suspect it will go another 210 K.

I could buy a new diesel, but this does the job nicely for me. My two shepherds have lots of room in the sleeper and when we are camping, they sleep overnight in the sleeper. No need for them in the trailer, keeps the wife happy too.

It's a plain jane truck, fm radio thats it. Figure with it being an older unit, less to go wrong.

The Powerstroke diesel has enough power to get things rolling and keep it at 100-110 K per hour, I get up the hills a little slower than the new rigs but I am not in a rush. 4.23 rear end gets me outta the soft campground sites easily too.

With the truck being a cargo van, the rear end is wider than a standard dually pickup, I find this to be very stable on the highway, the truck and trailer do not sway or wander at all.

Being a van front end, getting into tight campsites is easier, I can really maneuver in tight situations.
