Yes, a dog story.....

Unread postby thebadliz on Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:58 am

I love camping. I really do. I've been camping since I was two months old, and have continued throughout my life. My husband and I spent a week in August about 48 miles from home at the Brighton State Recreation Area in Brighton/Hamburg, Michigan. It was a great week with good weather, not too hot nor cold and we had a really nice campsite that backs onto a wooden area. I was woke at 4am one night to watch the racoons trying to eat the scraps in Alan's potato chip bag. That was cute to watch the two of them. But, I digress.......

The dog story. One night, Alan opens the camper door to let out the dogs before I go to bed and Chloe bolts out. Bolts. Like the greased lightening she can be. And bolts back to the camper just as quick. Alan yells "oh no!!" as he sees the black and white "kitty" that Chloe saw. I came out of the camper and grabbed the dog - my first mistake: the kitty was a skunk and now it's on my hands.......

....Alan makes the 11pm run to find an open store in the wilderness (okay, we aren't quite in the wilderness, but very little is open at 11pm) - tomato juice isn't the answer any more. It's woman's douche - vinegar and water variety.....Man, does she stink. Man, do my hands stink. My eyes are watering and I am thankful for once for my allergies - if she stinks that much for me, she must really stink.

Alan returns with his feminine hygiene products (as he said, self checkouts are a blessing because he didn't want the clerk to think that he was hanging out with a "skank" ) and Chloe gets an midnight bath with douche and cold water. She still stinks. It's after midnight and it's going to take us at least an hour to pack up and go home (which neither of us wanted to do). We couldn't leave her chained outside to find another kitty and we didn't want her in our bed. Gods, no!

The collaspable travel kennel that my co-worker bought me! It's under the bed in the camper. We pop that open and lay a dog bed in it and hope for the best. She still stinks, but she's now 5 feet from the bed and can't jump on us.

I crawl in bed, nauseated from the skunk smell, and curl up in the bed. Gods, my hands stink. No curling them up under my chin......nasty. The next morning Chloe gets two more baths.....she still stinks....but it's better. We stayed at the campground until Sunday morning - just a wonderful week.

Except for the stinky dog.....took about 2 months for that to completely disappear.....

p.s. My hands don't smell like skunk anymore. Either that, or I have gotten used to it.....And I still love camping.

You are well east of me aren't you? Ontario is another place that I like to visit - but I usually go north of Lake Superior....Love the whole area up there.....Made it to Algonquin several years ago - but haven't gone further east....

As for "Bad Liz" - it's really quite a tame story. I was on a group where there were two Liz's - the other Liz said that she would be the "young" Liz and I could be the "Old Liz" - I countered with several choice words   , was immediately dubbed the "Bad Liz" and it's stuck for about 12 years now. "Young" Liz has disappeared from that board, but the "Bad" Liz is still bad.

Yes, well on another site there is a JtB, John, the Bastard. It comes from a joint fridge in a youth hostel where ownership of articles could be disputed. He found that the label, 'John the Bastard' kept things for him.

Is your name unique? Mine is. I never have a problem with it.

We just got our first pet back in October, the cutest Shiatsu-poodle mix (spelling??).
After reading your story, now I realize that I've got something else to look forward to this spring while camping with a dog for the first time. ;)
