One of my favorite camping spots

Unread postby mountainman on Wed Mar 19, 2008 5:53 pm

We enjoy this special spot each summer. The picture is taken of Pearl Lake north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and is not only nice campground and close to Steamboat Lake State park but has lovely views in it's own right.

BEAUTIFUL spot. I've seen Pearl lake but never camped there. My Dad used to camp in a meadow (disbursed camping) on the way to Seed House, (just East of Clark) every summer. A few times I got to come out and visit for a week while they were there. One of my favorite places in Colorado. There is also a nice lake I've always wanted to camp on North on NFS 550 just across the Wyoming line but I don't know the name of the lake. Another beautiful spot in that area. Thanks for sharing the photo and by the way...welcome to the forum / Skip

I think you are referring to Hog Park in Wyoming. I've backpacked many miles in that country and one trip was from Hog park down the Encampment River to Emcampment, Wy. Beautiful country and somewhat undiscovered except by locals.

Hog Park it is. We used to do a little hiking ourselves on Sand Mountain just West of Clark. Had an acquaintance who used to lead Elk Hunting trips up there and let us hike on his property. Bringing back lots of old memories now. Thanks again / Skip

OK, here's the deal. We're heading to Colorado this summer. My SIL and her hubby live in Gold Hill, just outside Boulder. How far is it from Boulder to the lake that you posted? Which way? SIL and hubby will camp just about anywhere, anytime. Looks like a a spot that we might like to camp at. Directions would be nice. I'll bring beer.

Boulder to Steamboat Lake State Park is just around 200 miles - here is a link to the Google directions:
Boulder To Steamboat Lake Route Its a lovely drive - beautiful scenery all the way. We are thinking about heading up there over Labor day - either there or Dillon Lake at Silverthorne, which is on the way.

I'd plan on at least 5 or 6 hours though because that 200 miles includes a couple of major passes and another minor one plus 40 miles of back road driving from Steamboat to Hawns Peak area. MY opinion is it's nothing special from a scenery standpoint...just another FABULOUSLY BEAUTIFUL drive in Colorado :D

Thanks for the info guys. Maybe we'll make it over there. Do you know what are the roads like from the Wyoming side? Maybe we'll stop there on our way down or on our way back home. I'm pulling a 27' TT with a 1500 Silverado, but I did some mountain passes in British Columbia last year without too much fuss.

It is a great place to spend some quality time.
Here is a shot of a special place in the Snowy Range of Wyoming. another special place we visit.
And secondly if you like to hike in the back country, a shot of Emmiline Lake in the Commanche Peaks Wilderness Area west of Ft Collins, Co

Beautiful! We have mountains here, but our mountains are wooded. I went hiking right outside of Las Vegas and those mountains are just amazing the way they look like they are carved out.
