Hike over the Divide Summer of 07

Unread postby mountainman on Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:31 pm

Some friends and I took a "Over The Divide Hike" from Bear Lake in the Rocky Mountain National Park on the east side of the Continental Divide to Grand Lake on the west side of the Divide. The trip is 18.2 miles at altitudes up to 12,600 feet. Here are some shots of the Elk along the trail. They were in no hurry to move as we approached.

Great shots and kind of a co-incidence. DW and I wanted to take that Flattop Mountain trial ourselves some years back but ran into BIG TIME snow on Flattop and we just weren't equipped for it. Came up the Tonnahoutu (sp) Creek trail out of Granby and met up with the flattop trial. Thanks for bring back some great memories.

Skip: Yes snow can be a prpoblem in the early summer. We went across last summer during the last week of July. I had been across some 35 years ago with a backpack and we stayed over one night up on top that time. We have had a lot of snow this year so it will be a while before it is off this year. My hiking pardoner spend a couple of week at his daughters home above Steamboat Springs. He said they had over 500 inches up to this point. Sure would keep you close to home shoveling snow!

Here are a couple more shots, one of Bear Lake on the way up to Flattop mountain and then one taken almost to the top.
