Question on Crossing the border with hand guns.

New postby vonheise on Wed Feb 03, 2010 5:47 pm

I generally carry a gun or two when I travel as I sometimes stop at a truck parking area on Interstates and prefer to have some protection. I have a carry permit from the state of Tennessee which is recognised by many other states also. I plan to make a trip to Canada this spring and am wondering about how to cross over, and travel through Canada with a hand gun. I have done a Web search and found conflicting information from saying it is not allowed to getting permission in advance, to getting information and permission at the border. Has anyone had a personal experience, or know the answer to this question ?

I don't have any practical experience to offer, but I would be surprised if the Canadian Border Services allowed you in the country with a firearm, especially a handgun.
Handguns are a restricted weapon in Canada, and thus one has to jump thru many loops just to get one, and then you would have to belong to a local gun club, visit the range only etc.
Do post when you do find the offical answer, but like I mentioned, I doubt you would be allowed.

If you're talking about a hand gun, don't even think of trying to bring it across the border. You'll find yourself in a pile of trouble. I'm not anti-gun by any means, but you won't need one for personal protection in Canada. I found this link:http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/weapons_into_canada.asp
Its a good site for Americans coming up to Canada.

While the Canadian Firearms Program is under review, I doubt that the "No Handguns restriction" will be lifted. Here is a link to the RCMP site on that program: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/index-eng.htm

May I also direct you to 3 articles on RVing in Canada that I was asked to write a few years ago. I haven't been able to keep up the links, so I passed that back to the site owner. http://www.rvingoutpost.com/articlespecs.php?jobnum=50
Article 1 is on the guts of getting into Canada, #2 on Eastern Canada, & #3 on Western Canada.

If you are talking animal protection, talk about pepper spray. Only talk about animal protection. The other attitude cuts no ice up here, especially with legal authorities.

Also, when you are searching for another country than your own, go to a search engine with domain name search capability. Both Yahoo and Google have this. For Canada it's: http://www.google.ca But if you don't know what it is you can go to google and make your search term "google Australia" or such. Once at that specific country, there will be a circle you can tick saying: "pages from Canada" or "pages from Australia". This process cuts through a lot of material of little relevance. & when you want federal government info for Canada look for a url with ".gc.ca".
